The Waste Free World project has concluded its journey

Activities and outcomes of Waste Free World project

We are delighted to announce that our Waste Free World project is successfully coming to an end. The project might officially end in August 2025, but our efforts for a sustainable green and waste free future will continue beyond the lifetime of this project. The Waste Free World project was a 2-year European project, funded by the Erasmus Plus programme of the European Commission, with partners from France, Sweden, Ireland, Turkey, Spain, and Greece, whose main aims were to raise awareness on recycling, waste and techniques to reduce it, and to equip policy makers and youth workers with knowledge to promote recycling and waste reduction.

The project was a unique journey in inspiring and empowering individuals and communities to reduce waste, promote sustainability, and create a cleaner, healthier planet.

Activities

The main activities of the project focused on the following main thematic areas and activities:

  1. Reduce, Reuse & Recycle: Reducing and reusing items are fundamental steps towards creating a waste- free world. By consciously choosing to buy less and opt for reusable products, we can significantly cut down on the amount of waste we generate. Embracing a mindset of reduction and reuse helps conserve resources and reduces the strain on our waste management systems.
  2. Composting Organic Waste: Instead of throwing away food scraps and yard waste, composting allows us to recycle these materials into something valuable for gardens and landscapes. Setting up a composting system at home can be simple and rewarding. From kitchen scraps like vegetable peelings and coffee grounds to garden waste like leaves and grass clippings, composting transforms waste into a resource, promoting healthier soil and reducing our carbon footprint.
  3. Organize Community Cleanups: Organizing community cleanups is an impactful way to reduce waste and promote environmental stewardship. Community cleanups not only improve the appearance and health of our local environments but also raise awareness about the consequences of littering and the importance of proper waste disposal. By participating in or organizing such events, individuals can make a tangible difference in their communities, foster a sense of collective responsibility, and inspire others to take action against waste.

Outcomes

Based on their findings of both desk and field research, the project’s partners created exceptional educational materials with the aim of promoting a green lifestyle and contributing to recycling and protecting the environment. In an effort to transform the abstract concept of sustainability into tangible results through recycling efforts and fostering youth leadership within waste reduction, “A Waste Free World: Methodology Handbook” was created and translated into 6 languages. Its aims were to teach young people how to eliminate food waste, to enhance sustainable practices, inspire a new generation of young people, youth centers, educators and parents to reuse and recycle and, lastly, to help youth workers improve their ability to address and contribute to the objectives of the “Cleaner Europe 2030” plan.

Thus, the Waste Free World project training programme was aiming at the same direction, with courses, where young people could become familiar with terms, concepts and forms of recycling, but, also, learn, among others, about launching a sustainable business model for a Circular Economy and addressing climate change. All educational courses are available and can be accessed on the Waste Free World website.

Finally, the “Curriculum for youth educators and decision makers”, developed during the project, focuses on effective pedagogical methods to deliver the informal and formal youth education programmes, providing, thus, educational models, practical examples, recommendations, best practices and didactic notes.

The journey of the Waste Free World project might end today but our collective action should continue towards a greener, more sustainable tomorrow!
