Curriculum development for zero waste management in the hospitality and tourism sector

Tourism-Zero project aims to support two Higher Education Institutions in Thailand (Chiang Mai University & Prince of Songkla University), two in China (Chengdu University & Yunnan University) and two in Lao PDR (Savannakhet University & National University of Lao) to boost the quality and relevance of their academic offer to the challenges of environmental degradation in their countries and to the market needs for sustainable zero-waste management.

Within this context, the main objectives of Tourism-Zero project are to:

Assess practices, needs, knowledge and skills gaps on zero-waste management of the tourism and hospitality sector
Develop new courses on zero-waste management for sustainable hospitality operations
Strengthen the skills of HEIs teaching staff on zero-waste management in hospitality/tourism operations
Improve the level of skills of the future workforce (students) in the tourism and hospitality sector on zero-waste management
Enhanced reskilling/ upskilling of the hospitality and tourism labour force on the next generation of waste management skills
Raise awareness on zero-waste practices and careers in the hospitality and tourism sector
Modernize the academic offer of HEIs Hospitality and Tourism (and other relevant) Departments on innovative zero-waste tourism.

Tourism-Zero at a glance:

Development of research protocol
Research in Thailand, China and Lao PDR to assess the level of knowledge and implementation/adoption of zero waste management practices in the hospitality and tourism sector
Recommendations on curriculum development
Development of 4 non-degree courses on zero-waste tourism
Training of academic staff on the zero-waste tourism courses
Piloting of the courses with HEI students
Organization of placements/traineeships for students in enterprises
Piloting of the courses with hospitality and tourism sector staff
Evaluation of the pilots, recommendations for improvement, and fine-tuning of the courses
Organization of dissemination events
Three (3) 1-day information events in Thailand, China and Lao PDR, by each of the 6 Asian HEIs
Third-party events, such as academic conferences and workshops, seminars, relevant projects events, job fairs etc.
