Combating sports-gambling addiction through sports

The Bet on Sport project, which recognises the growing problem of (sports) gambling addiction and the positive effects of sport in combating it, aims to promote the participation of gamblers in sports/physical activities as a means of improving their mental and physical health in Romania, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Finland, Italy and Turkey.

Particularly, the Bet on Sport project aims to:

  • Build the skills of addiction/health professionals and sports professionals on jointly using sports/physical exercise as adjunct therapy for gambling addiction – At least 200 professionals (~100 addiction/health professionals and 100 sport professionals) will have new/enhanced skills on using sports/physical exercise as adjunct therapy for gambling addiction, by end of project.
  • Develop cooperation of addiction/health professionals and sports professionals in addressing gambling addiction in a holistic way through sport/physical activity – At least 50 addiction/health professionals and sport professionals engaged in joint activities aiming to address gambling addiction in a holistic way through sport, during pilots.
  • Raise the awareness of addiction/health and sports stakeholders and authorities on the importance of sport/physical exercise as adjunct therapy – Awareness and understanding of at least 400 addiction/health and sports stakeholders and/or authorities raised on the importance of sport/physical exercise as adjunct therapy to gambling, by end of project.
  • Enhance access of gambling addicts to innovative sport/physical activity programmes (developed by addiction/health and sports professionals) – At least 100 gambling addicts engaging in sport/physical activity programmes jointly developed by addiction/health and sports professionals, during pilots.
