SustainaBlue aims to support Malaysian and Indonesian HEIs to boost their relevance in the labour market and society for a sustainable blue economy and green transition. More specifically, the project aims to:
- strengthen the skills of HEIs teaching staff on curriculum development and teaching methods & content of blue skills
- improve the capacities of HEIs staff on active cooperation with stakeholders (Quintuple Helix
- strengthen the cooperation of HEIs with the industry and other stakeholders to address mismatches between the requirements of employers and the offer of HEIs, and to promote Quintuple Helix innovation (Industry-Government-Public and Civil Society-Environment)
- modernize the academic offer of HEIs towards sustainable blue economy
- transfer the HEIs teaching and/or research results to the local coastal communities
- improve the level of skills and employability potential of students in sustainable blue economy
- enhance the reskilling/ upskilling of the active labour force in the blue industries on the next generation of blue skills
- raise awareness among students, especially women, on “sustainable blue careers”.
Its main activities include:

the establishment of Sustainable Blue Economy Centres and networks of collaboration with blue industries and other stakeholders

the development and operation of regional Blue & Green Acceleration Platform

the development and piloting of new courses on blue skills most in need, to improve talent development (students and current labour force)

Sustainablue at a glance:
- Set up and operation of 4 “Sustainable Blue Economy Centres” in each HEIs
- Capacity building of HEIs administrative and/or academic staff on developing and sustaining collaboration frameworks
- At least (3) 1-day workshops organized per Centre for 30-50 local fishermen, aquaculture operators, small-scale entrepreneur on sustainable Blue Economy
- At least 1 Roadshow event to be organized by each “Sustainable Blue Economy Centre” targeting at least 3 primary and/or secondary schools (approximately 100 children/school), with videos, talks and other material about ocean health, resources and management, and the blue economy
- At least (3) short training/information programmes per Centre, targeting (at least 100) young volunteers in local civil society and communities, implemented in cooperation with local CSOs
- Development of Digital platform
- Piloting of the online courses with HEIs students and with professionals
- 1-day event in each of the 4 Asian HEIs for 30-40 relevant stakeholders
